MYANMAR TRAVEL
Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, is one of Asia’s hidden gems. With spectacular sight-seeing, friendly locals, and a deep cultural and spiritual heritage Myanmar is an enchanting destination loved by all who visit.
There are four main stops on any Myanmar travel itinerary: Yangon, Mandalay, Bagan, and Inle Lake. In between, the country’s smaller towns, pristine beaches and remote mountain areas are wonderful additions for visitors who have more time to spare.
Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon, is a relatively quiet and charming city. Its impressive colonial and spiritual legacy makes it one of the most fascinating towns in Southeast Asia. Dominating the city skyline is the resplendent Shwedagon Pagoda, one of the most important religious sites in the country. Visitors can learn more about the rich culture and interesting history of the country with a tour of the National Museum or spend their time browsing for traditional Burmese handicrafts at Bogyoke Market (also called Scott’s market). For a taste of rural Myanmar, the Yangon’s circular train loops through the city’s outskirts at a meandering pace - perfect for watching the scenery, or travel by boat to the nearby pottery community of Thandwe.
Step back in time with a trip to Mandalay, the country’s cultural capital and former royal city. Mandalay is filled with craftshops where the techniques used to produce items like tapestries, wood carvings, gold leaf, and marionettes have remained unchanged for centuries. Temples such as Mahamuni, Kuthodaw, and Shwenandaw exemplify the deep religious beliefs of the Burmese and the towering Mandalay Hill is an ideal spot for watching the sunset over the city. Nearby excursions can be made to the ancient capitals of Ava, Amarapura, Saigaing, and Mingun or to the former hill-station of Pyin Oo Lwin.
Bagan, also referred to as Pagan, is one of the most impressive archeological sites in the world. Over 2000 temples and stupas dot the plains and the beautiful Irrawaddy River flows alongside the city. The majority of the pagodas were constructed from the 11th-13th centuries when Bagan was the capital and exploring these ruins is a fascinating glimpse in to this ancient era.
While Bagan is filled with historical wonders, Inle Lake is a place of natural wonders. This tranquil body of water sits nestled among the lush green Shan Hills and surrounded by ethnic minority villages. Travel by canoe to visit weaving villages, floating gardens, and gleaming temples. Watch the lake’s Intha fishermen steer their boats using a unique leg-rowing technique and catch a sun set from the balcony of a lakeside hotel.
Other popular Myanmar travel destinations include the trekking areas of Kengtung and Kalaw, the beaches of Ngapali and Ngwe Saung, or smaller towns such as Pindaya, Monywa, and Mrauk U.
Experience the cultural wonders and natural beauty of Myanmar. Whether for a short journey or a long in-depth holiday, Exotissimo can create an itinerary suited to fit your needs and is sure to create a lifetime of memories.
